Book Description
A valuable volume in the Notable Scientists series, A to Z of Biologists uses the device of biography as a way to put a human face on science, a method that adds immediacy to the prose for the high schooler who might have an interest in pursuing a career in biology. This comprehensive survey features more than 180 entries and 50 black and white photographs.

Each profile focuses on a particular biologist’s research and contributions to the field and his or her effect on scientists whose work followed. Their lives and personalities are discussed as well through incidents, quotations, and photographs. Culturally inclusive and spanning the whole range of biologists from ancient times to the present day, the entries on women and minority biologists in particular articulate some of the obstacles that these biologists overcame in the process of reaching their goals.

This volume is an ideal resource for students and general readers interested in the history of biology or the personal and professional lives of significant biologists.

Book Review
Grade 9 Up An introduction to 184 scientists from 500 B.C.E. to the present. The selected individuals span a range of countries (though a majority are from Great Britain and the U.S.) and fields; nonbiologists who have had a major impact on the field are also included. The volume is arranged alphabetically; cross-references are included. Each entry contains basic biographical data and a readable essay of 500 to 1500 words. Articles focus on the scientists’ work, but contain brief information on family, education, research, and awards.

Readers may notice a typographical error in a date under the entry for William Harvey. All entries conclude with further-reading suggestions. Average-quality, black-and-white photographs are scattered throughout. Contents lists are organized under country of birth, country of scientific activity, and year of birth; there is no list by field of specialization. Students researching a biologist from a particular time period will find the chronology useful. Notable Scientists (Gale, 2001) and Scientists (UXL, 1996) contain much of the same information, but libraries needing a resource devoted solely to this specialization will find A to Z to be an adequate tool. –Shauna Yusko, King County Library System, Bellevue, WA
